Dog size chart by weight
Vets and dog age charts group dogs into four sizes by adult weight. Enter your dog's weight to see which group it belongs to, or scan the chart and the breed table below.
Dog size chart
| Size | Weight (lb) | Weight (kg) | Age 7 in human years | Age 10 in human years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | Under 20 lb | Under 9 kg | 44 | 56 |
| Medium | 21 to 50 lb | 10 to 23 kg | 46 | 60 |
| Large | 51 to 90 lb | 23 to 41 kg | 50 | 66 |
| Giant | Over 90 lb | Over 41 kg | 56 | 78 |
Size is based on the adult weight, not on height or on how big the dog looks. The last two columns come from the size based dog age chart used on this site, so you can see why size matters for aging.

How to use the size
- For a puppy, estimate the adult size with the puppy size calculator, then pick the size group.
- For age, use the dog years to human years calculator, where size changes the result after the second year.
- To check that your dog is at a good weight, use the body condition check.
How long to walk a puppy
A common rule of thumb, attributed to the Kennel Club, is five minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day, until the puppy is fully grown. Enter your puppy's age to see what that means.
Twice a day, about 40 minutes in total.
For a dog that is fully grown, the same guide says all adult dogs should get between 30 minutes and two hours of physical activity and mental stimulation a day. This is a general rule and not a breed guide. Energetic breeds, older dogs and dogs with health problems differ, so ask your vet.
